When you purchase something from our store, as part of the buying and selling process, we collect the personal information you give us such as your name, address and email address. Your email address is added to a MailChimp list specifically composed of customers, so we may send you special offers exclusive to our customers. You may receive a confirmation email to properly opt in, and you can unsubscribe at any time.. We will use your email address (and, if you request it, your phone number for order updates by text) to keep you informed of the order as it is processed and shipped (or, if necessary, returned/exchanged).

We do not and never will sell your information to any third party for any reason whatsoever. MailChimp, Shopify (and, if you use a third-party payment processor like Amazon Pay or Paypal) may collect certain information in the process of fulfilling the order, but insofar as we know, nothing is stored or used again at a later time via those processors. Please review their privacy policy for details.

When you browse our store, we also automatically receive your computer’s internet protocol (IP) address in order to provide us with information that helps us learn about your browser and operating system. This is a Shopify feature and we have no control over it. They may also embed cookies that collect information such as an order that is pending, but you would just get an email with a shopping cart reminder in that event. If you do not want the reminder, email us at shop [at] smithobolenskymedia [dot] com and we will delete you from the list of Incomplete Orders. (We have all had orders we were in the middle of placing on our phone or on the computer and then been frustrated when we have to start over, so we are not disabling the feature outright.)

How do you get my consent?
When you provide us with personal information to complete a transaction, verify your credit card, place an order, arrange for a delivery or return a purchase, we imply that you consent to our collecting it and using it for that specific reason only.
If we ask for your personal information for a secondary reason, like the rare e-marketing we do, we will either ask you directly for your expressed consent, or provide you with an opportunity to say no. (Our primary form of “marketing” is basically connecting with people via our blog, which you can subscribe to separately, or via our social media, which you would expressly follow. We will send you one email letting you know these exist, and otherwise you will only be sent the special offers noted above.)

How do I withdraw my consent?
You may unsubscribe from the MailChimp mailing list.
If you don’t want to receive the emails updating you on your order, there should be a means to opt-out in the email. If you do not see a way to do this, just email us at shop [at] smithobolenskymedia [dot] com and we will cease the updates.

We will have to keep a record of you as our customer in our database for tax purposes (we couldn’t delete your order record, for instance, which has embedded in it your personal information) but we will not go back and mine old records for any campaigns. Smith-Obolensky Media

We may disclose your personal information if we are required by law to do so or if you violate our Terms of Service.

Our store is hosted on Shopify Inc. They provide us with the online e-commerce platform that allows us to sell our products to you.
Your data is stored through Shopify’s data storage, databases and the general Shopify application. They store your data on a secure server behind a firewall.

If you choose a direct payment gateway to complete your purchase, then Shopify stores your credit card data. It is encrypted through the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). Your purchase transaction data is stored only as long as is necessary to complete your purchase transaction. After that is complete, your purchase transaction information is deleted.
All direct payment gateways adhere to the standards set by PCI-DSS as managed by the PCI Security Standards Council, which is a joint effort of brands like Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

PCI-DSS requirements help ensure the secure handling of credit card information by our store and its service providers.
For more insight, you may also want to read Shopify’s Terms of Service ( or Privacy Statement (
Please note that your credit card information is only in the system for seven days, so we will have to charge your card before we ship the product out (since this is for preorders and the book won’t be shipped until January 25th, 2018.)

In general, the third-party providers used by us will only collect, use and disclose your information to the extent necessary to allow them to perform the services they provide to us.
However, certain third-party service providers, such as payment gateways and other payment transaction processors, have their own privacy policies in respect to the information we are required to provide to them for your purchase-related transactions.

For these providers, we recommend that you read their privacy policies so you can understand the manner in which your personal information will be handled by them.
In particular, remember that certain providers may be located in or have facilities that are located a different jurisdiction than either you or us. So if you elect to proceed with a transaction that involves the services of a third-party service provider, then your information may become subject to the laws of the jurisdiction(s) in which that service provider or its facilities are located.

As an example, if you are located in Canada and your transaction is processed by a payment gateway located in the United States, then your personal information used in completing that transaction may be subject to disclosure under United States legislation, including the Patriot Act.
